Havørnulykka «The Sea Eagle Accident»

Tuesday 16. of June 1936 the sea plane «Sea eagle» took off from Bergen Harbor as usual at 06.30 in the morning. The plan was to follow the usual post- and passenger route north bound to Tromsø. Everything indicated that it would be a normal pleasant trip. The weather forecast was not the best, but nothing threatening. The radio communication was excellent and the last contact was at 06.45 when the plain reported to be passing Sognefjord. However, the plane was on a more eastern route and people at Risnes noticed that the plane was flying low, and suddenly changed course towards the west. At the same time it started climbing before it disappeared into the thick grey fog which was covering Lihesten. Suddenly there was a deafening sound as the plane had crashed directly into the mountain side of Lihesten and exploded.

All seven on board, four crew and three passengers were killed.

You can see the memorial stone which was unveiled on the 14th of June 2008 in honour of the dead and the brave efforts from the rescue teams. The memorial is located at Risneshaugane, a short walk from the cabins on the main land. At the memorial stone you can study the mountain and the place the plane crashed.
